  • Thank you for sharing your perspective on Housing Needs in Center! As we continue to work on adding and improving housing in the Town we want to get your perspective on what is missing. Here are some definitions as you fill out the survey:

A “small-scale apartment” generally means a building with multiple homes under one roof, but on a more neighborhood-friendly scale. This might look like a two- to three-story “garden-style” apartment buildingwith 4–12 units, often with shared entrances, hallways, or outdoor spaces. It is not a large, high-rise development but instead a modest-sized building that can fit more naturally into a residential community.

    ----------------

A mid-scale apartment typically refers to a multi-family residential building containing 12 to 36 units across 2 to 3 stories. These developments are larger than small-scale or single-lot projects but more compact and community-oriented than large apartment complexes, often fitting well within small-town or neighborhood contexts.

    ----------------

Affordable Housing: In most housing programs, “affordable housing” refers to housing that is affordable to households earning about 60% of the Area Median Income (AMI) or less. For example, if the median income in a community is $50,000 for a family of four (4), then affordable housing would serve four-person households earning $30,000 or below. Affordable housing may be supported by public subsidies, tax credits, or other financing tools to keep rents or mortgage costs within reach for lower-income families.

    -----------

Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU): An ADU is a small, self-contained home located on the same property as a primary house. ADUs can take many forms—for example:

    • A small cottage or tiny home in the backyard,
    • A garage apartment above or beside an existing garage, or
    • A basement apartment with its own entrance.

They are sometimes called “granny flats,” “casitas,” or “in-law suites.” ADUs are meant to provide more flexible and affordable housing options while making efficient use of existing lots.

    Unidad Accesoria (ADU)
